Carpet Protectors

There are two types of protective properties included with most residential carpeting when it is manufactured. The first protective property we will explain is the acid dye blocker.  This is a stain resist property applied during the manufacture of the carpet. This is a clear dye that fills the extra dye sites when the fiber is made. When the fiber is dyes to the color you have chosen, not all of the dye sites are filled. The purpose of the application is to help keep foreign dyes such as red beverage dye and the likes from entering the otherwise empty dye sites. If the spill is able to get to the acid dye blocker, the foreign dye will eventually penetrate the dye site and cause a stain due to the predominate foreign dye coloring.

The second type of protector is a fluorochemical.  This protector will help bide time to keep foreign dyes in spills from getting to the acid dye blocker. This protector is usually sprayed over the carpet fibers after manufacture to form a protective shield around the entire carpet fiber. This will not only aide in the process of resisting stains but because of this "shield" it is said it will assist dry soil in sliding off the carpet fibers during normal vacuuming. For this same reason, your next professional cleaning should be more effective.

Fluorochemicals will be removed with moderate foot traffic in a period of approximately two years and earlier in higher traffic areas. After market protectors are also removed to a very small degree during normal professional cleaning.

Carpet protectors are not miracle products. They help to keep your carpets clean with regular maintenance. Remember, what falls onto a carpet will remain until it is removed but protectors bide time before a spot becomes a permanent stain.
